A MUSIC-DRAMA
in movement and song
by Distinguished Silpathorn Artist of Thailand, Somtow Sucharitkul

… The legendary City of Ayuthaya, which is about to embark on a war with its bitter enemy the Kingdom of Pegu, ruled by the ambitious and expansionist King Tabengshaveti. Ayuthaya’s dynasty is in chaos because of a succession of assassinations and all hopes for the future rest in the young Prince Thian, who is concealed in a monastery and who has taken a monk’s vows, leaving behind his beautiful wife Suriyothai.
Somtow Sucharitkul’s ballet-opera is a rich pageant of selected scenes from the history of that conflict, beginning with Prince Thian being acclaimed King of Ayuthaya and ending with Suriyothai’s heroic sacrifice which saves her husband and her kingdom.
Designed for a cast of dancers and singers and a large symphony orchestra combined with classical Thai instruments, this music-drama is a new stylistic fusion, inspired in equal parts by classical Thai dance drama, opera, ballet, and ancient Thai temple murals. The music drama will feature some of Thailand’s finest singers, dancers, and musicians.
