A New UNESCO World Heritage Site in Thailand
On 25 July 2026, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, becoming Thailand’s ninth World Heritage Site and the first in Southern Thailand.
For over 1,500 years, this sacred temple has stood as one of Southeast Asia’s most important centers of Theravāda Buddhism. Home to its iconic bell-shaped stupa, the site reflects centuries of faith, craftsmanship, and cultural exchange that continue to inspire visitors today.
More than a monument, it is a living heritage where history and spirituality remain deeply woven into everyday life.
